The Tangletwigs is a small forest on Mistmantle that is surrounded by thorn bushes with very sharp prickles. It is so dense any animal trying to get through it gets scratched a lot unless they are used maneuvering among the branches. Few animals live there, but the ones that do learn to be quick and nimble around all the bushes. Because of this, most of the Island's best acrobats come from there.

One of the most notable locations in the Tangletwings is Lady Aspen's grave, which was taken care of and often visited by Gleaner prior to the conclusion of the Raven War.

History[]

Urchin and the Heartstone[]

Gleaner often comes to the Tangletwigs to visit Lady Aspen's grave. Gleaner is very upset that Aspen wasn't buried in a nicer place and thinks she should have been buried in the vault with the queens. She is also annoyed about how much she gets scratched all the time. Sepia and Needle follow Gleaner to Tangletwigs and find out about the grave.

The Heir of Mistmantle[]

Gleaner continues to visit Lady Aspen's grave every day. Linty is also hiding Catkin deep in the Tangletwigs until she moves her hiding place down to the shore later on. It's said that Linty lived there when she was young and used to be a dancer, and that's why she is able to move among the thorns with ease. Linty also takes the muslin Gleaner puts on Lady Aspen's grave to keep the sun off the grave, and Gleaner thinks that Husk takes it, reinforcing the rumors of his return.

Urchin and the Raven War[]

Gleaner still visits Lady Aspen's grave every day. When the ravens attack, Gleaner refuses to leave the grave unprotected. Gleaner also polishes Aspen's bracelet and places it on the grave and gets a blanket on the grave to hide it; however, Grith later takes it to spite her.

When the Silver Prince flies over the Tangletwigs, he sees Aspen's bracelet and swoops down to claim it, but Gleaner jumps out and kills him in the attempt to protect her lady's grave. Other ravens are shocked and attack Gleaner, seriously wounding her, but Urchin and Cedar defend her and fight the ravens off. Urchin is also seriously wounded, but both he and Gleaner survive, though Gleaner is left crippled for life and thus unable to return to the Tangletwigs ever again.
