Gripthroat was an ancient mole from Mistmantle Island. He is a subject of many horrific tales and stories, mainly revolving around him killing animals, giving him a boogeyman-like status as well as his name. Due to being a legendary figure, he never appeared as a character.
History[]
Urchin and the Heartstone[]
When Tay teaches Scatter the history and customs of Mistmantle, at one occasion she tells her a story about Gripthroat, which causes Scatter to have a hard time falling asleep.
When Cedar and Lugg organize Urchin and Juniper's escape from their prison on Whitewings, Lugg hears moles running through the tunnels next to them and says that they were running 'like there’s Gripthroat behind them'.
The Heir of Mistmantle[]
When the young animals are staying in the Old Palace, some of them ask for a story about Gripthroat, but Jig refuses because she doesn't want to give the babies nightmares. Tipp also leads a pretend battle against Gripthroat while playing.
