―Lady Cott about her husband

Captain Lugg was a mole Captain on Mistmantle Island as well as an important and well-respected member of the Circle. He was married to Lady Cott and had three daughters, Wing, Wren and Moth.

Lugg died when he and Urchin were attempting to bring Linty back to shore during the rescue of Catkin, who was already off the boat. Linty attacked Lugg in panic with a knife and they both landed in the water, and while Lugg was rescued, he died as a result.

Personality[]

Captain Lugg was a very caring and thoughtful animal. He would often wink to Urchin when in tight spots, cheering him up.

He was a strong digger and had a great amount of information on the tunnels running under the sea. Lugg also hated the sea and boats, as is the nature with most moles.

History[]

Urchin of the Riding Stars[]

Lugg aided Crispin when he was exiled, hiding his Captain's sword and cloak which were supposed to be destroyed. He also was one of the animals helping Padra and Arran to save baby animals from being culled; in particular, he was the one to save Scufflen from Husk's rooms.

Lugg was pivotal in the insurrection against Husk, and he led a band of hedgehogs against Husk's mercenaries during the battle at the Spring Festival. After the death of Husk and Aspen and the return of Crispin, he and Arran were made Captains.

Urchin and the Heartstone[]

Captain Lugg with a band of moles attempted to reach Whitewings Island by the tunnels and rescue Urchin and Juniper, but his attempts were thwarted, and his band of moles were entirely killed except for himself. He was then sent back to Mistmantle to "send a message" to Crispin. He returned back to Whitewings, however, and then went into hiding with the Larchlings, later returning to Mistmantle together with Urchin, Juniper, and Cedar on their seized boat, much to his dismay.

The Heir of Mistmantle[]

Captain Lugg was one of the leaders during the evacuation efforts in preparation for a landslide. He and Urchin stayed back evacuating families right up until the landslide hit. Lugg was caught in the landslide, but made it out through another tunnel that was opened up during the landslide.

During the rescue of Princess Catkin, Captain Lugg and Urchin pulled Linty into their boat to get her back to the island. Linty was known to distrust Captains, and despite Lugg taking off his circlet, there was still an imprint of it in his fur. Completely unexpectedly, Linty attacked Lugg with a knife, stabbing him and throwing both of them into the water. Lugg was rescued by otters who were surrounding the boat, but died due to a combination of blood loss and old age. He was later given a funeral and burial surrounded by his family and friends. Fingal of the Floods decided he would honor Captain Lugg by naming his new boat "Captain Lugg".

Legacy[]

Lugg is regarded as a hero of Mistmantle and remembered in the Threadings, made by Needle, because of his role in rescuing Princess Catkin.

He is also became a hero and an example for all the moles of Mistmantle. After his death, the moles were reluctant to follow Lugg's footsteps and take his place as a Captain, because they felt that they could never replace him.
