―Filbert about Apple's cordial

Filbert is a squirrel, who is good friends with Corr and his great-aunt Kererra. He is married to Apple, thus becoming Urchin's step-father.

Appearance[]

Filbert is described as a stout and solid squirrel who seemed old to Corr, but probably wasn’t really.

Personality[]

Filbert is a slow-witted and shy squirrel who was too timid to mix with other squirrels and otters on the island. He loved the smell and taste of Apple's cordial because it reminded him of his mother's.

History[]

Urchin of the Riding Stars[]

Filbert mentions that he was present in the Tower when Captain Crispin was accused of murder and exiled.

Urchin and the Raven War[]

Filbert was first seen working with Great-Aunt Kererra in the smokehouse. Corr asks him to tell him about the Tower, and Filbert tells him that Brother Fir was very ill, which prompted Corr to journey to the Tower to see Brother Fir.

When the ravens came to Mistmantle to attack, Filbert took part in the battle by shooting arrows at them. However, he hit his head on a tree trunk and was dazed by the blow. Half-stunned, he forgot about the ravens and got lost in the forest where he was attacked by the Silver Prince. The Silver Prince needed entertainment, so he pecked at Filbert's head and ripped out the fur on his head, ears, and tail. However, the Silver Prince was enjoying himself so much that he did not see Apple in the burrow, who dragged Filbert down the burrow.

Filbert recognized a familiar scent once he got into the burrow, and Apple offered him some of her cordial, saying that he'd feel better after he drank it. Filbert drank some cordial and started to cry, and when Apple asked him what was wrong, he said that his mother used to make the same cordial for him. Apple was happy about this since no one else liked her cordial, so she said she brought a lot of it and refilled his cup.

At some point, Filbert submitted a kingsmantle recipe his mother used make to Crackle, who rejected it in revulsion due to an excess of black pepper and cloves. the ravens left Mistmantle, Filbert and Apple went to see Urchin, who was unconscious after being badly wounded by a raven. When Urchin woke up, Apple told him that she and Filbert were getting married, and asked Urchin if he was okay with it. Urchin was surprised by the news, but happy for them, and he thought that it was wonderful.

Urchin and the Rage Tide[]

Filbert and Apple come to see Urchin's ceremony as he is made a Captain. Later, Filbert and Apple are visiting Mossberry out of kindness, trying to offer him some company, but he hardly notices them.
